Hohhot Airport was built in 1958, approved by the State Council as an air port in 1991, and officially decided and announced by ICAO as one of the 14 internationally scheduled flight airports in China in 1993, which has become an important window for economic and trade exchanges and opening to the outside world of the autonomous region. After years of continuous construction and improvement, the 4E-rated airspace area can be used for Boeing 747-400 and smaller models of large passenger aircraft to take off and land and can ensure B747-8 passenger aircraft to alternate. Hohhot Airport has undergone four large-scale expansions, the most recent of which was in 2020. The expansion, renovation, and upgrading project included building a new aircraft pier, a new international terminal building, and a new VIP building and shifting the function of the existing terminal building from processing international flights to handling domestic flights. After the renovation, the terminal building covers an area of 106,000 square meters, with 70 stands, 22 jet bridges, 47 check-in counters, and 24 security inspection passages. In 2022, it saw a total of 48,000 takeoffs and landings, and 4.54 million passenger throughput, with 177 routes reaching 79 cities.
