Wuhai Airport started construction on March 25, 2002, was officially opened on December 12, 2003, and was handed over to Inner Mongolia Civil Aviation Airport Group for management on August 13, 2008. In 2021, the restructuring of the head and branch offices was completed, which built a solid air bridge for the local economic take-off. Wuhai Airport is a civil regional airport, with a technical grade of 4C in the airfield area, a runway with a length of 2,600 meters and a width of 45 meters, seven apron parking spaces, and a terminal building area of 12,480 square meters.

In recent years, Wuhai Airport has thoroughly implemented the strategy of "linkage between trunk and branch airports" of Inner Mongolia Civil Aviation Airport Group, persistently practiced the people-centered development concept, put safety first, and constantly met the new needs of the people for better air travel. It actively develops the aviation market, and the passenger throughput has increased rapidly. In 2019, the passenger throughput exceeded 520,000. At present, Wuhai Airport operates 13 routes in 17 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Xi'an, Hohhot, Zhengzhou, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Xilinhot, Dalian, Tangshan, Shijiazhuang, Chengdu, Jinan, and Ordos, connecting the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and other economic circles, and continuously contributing aviation power to local economic development.
