Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport officially operated on June 16, 2013. In August 2020, the reconstruction and expansion of Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport were completed, with smooth operation. The airspace area is Class 4C, the runway is 3,000 meters long and 45 meters wide, and a new parallel taxiway with a total length of 3,000 meters and three taxiways connecting other parts are built. There are 14 apron parking areas (Class C) and one deicing apron parking area (Class C). Terminal 1 covers an area of 5,400 square meters, Terminal 2 covers an area of 14,000 square meters, and there are seven gallery bridges. The designed annual passenger capacity is one million, with 650 tons of cargo and mail capacity. At present, Zhangjiakou Airport has operated 9 routes in 11 cities.

During the Beijing Winter Olympics, Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport, as an airport serving the Winter Olympics, supported 185 Olympic-related personnel, torchbearers, and unregistered media, and guaranteed 343 Olympic-related navigation, achieving the goal of "zero incidents, zero mistakes, zero complaints, zero infections, and zero public opinion".
