Nanchang Changbei International Airport was built on October 20, 1996, and put into use on September 10, 1999. In February 2004, it passed the acceptance of opening ports for foreign aircraft and was promoted to an international airport. With the development of the aviation business, the expansion project of Nanchang Changbei International Airport started on July 28, 2008, and was completed and put into operation on May 23, 2011. In 2017, Nanchang Changbei International Airport reached the 10 million level by passenger traffic. In 2019, Nanchang Changbei International Airport achieved a throughput of 13.63 million passengers and a cargo and mail throughput of 122,500 tons. In 2020, the cargo and mail throughput exceeded 180,000 tons, and the freight growth rate ranked the highest among provincial airports. The third phase expansion project of Nanchang Changbei International Airport started at the end of 2019. In the short-term target year (2030), the terminal area was planned to meet the annual throughput of 45 million passengers. There are three terminals with a total construction area of about 500,000 square meters. Among them, the current terminals are expected to handle 20 million passengers, and Terminal 3 is planned to handle 25 million passengers.
